This photograph by renowned photographer Michael Romney exemplifies one golfer's attempt to reach the gods of golf. This photo was taken at the cathedral at Queens College at the University of St. Andrews in St. Andrews, Scotland.

  • America's First Golf Photo

    On the morning of February 22, 1888, John Reid told his friends to meet him on the old cow pasture across from where he lived. Just days earlier, Reid had received his precious cargo straight from Old Tom Morris shop in St. Andrews. On that historic day, three golf holes, about 100 yards long, were laid out over the bumpy terrain and cups were dug up from the ground with the head of a cleek. Golf had finally come to America.
